Why horseback riding in Kyrgyzstan?

Riding a horse in Kirghizia means immersing yourself in the age-old way of life of the Kyrgyz nomads. An authentic experience that lets you enjoy the country’s wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery! This activity is suitable for beginners and experienced riders alike. Kyrgyz horses have a very calm temperament and you will usually be accompanied. Depending on what you want to do, it’s possible to go for a half-day ride or set off to conquer the mountains for a few days. Horses are easy to find, especially in tourist areas, where agencies will be happy to organize your excursion for you!

Organize your horse trek in Kyrgyzstan

Travel with a local Kyrgyz agency

There are many local agencies that organize horseback excursions. You’ll usually be accompanied by an English-speaking guide and a horseman (usually the owner of the horses). You pay a fee that includes horse hire, two guides, accommodation (usually in a yurt) and food for the duration of the trek. You’ll find agencies in major towns such as Kochkor, Naryn and Karakol, and close to tourist attractions.

Leaving with a CBT

The CBT or “Community Based Tourism Association” was created in the 2000s, with the support of Switzerland, to meet tourism demand while promoting responsible tourism that benefits local stakeholders. While the intention of these associations is absolutely laudable, today CBT has become a real small business, as it is extremely lucrative. There are CBTs in all tourist areas of the country, offering all kinds of services: excursions on foot or on horseback, vehicle rental, homestays, etc. We have observed many abuses (excessive prices, overbooking, underpaid families…) and a service that is less and less up to scratch. That’s why we encourage you to go directly to the nomads or to small local agencies.

Directly with nomads

Another option is to rent the horses directly to individuals, nomads or villagers, on the spot. The #1 advantage of this approach is that you pay local people directly for their services, without any intermediaries. What’s more, they’ll probably invite you to share a meal with them or follow them in their daily activities. Authentic experience guaranteed! The main drawbacks are that the horses aren’t necessarily used to being ridden by beginners, which can make the experience rather sporty (or even dangerous). What’s more, you won’t benefit from the translation of a guide to explain Kyrgyz culture, landscapes or animals. You can buy our Kyrgyz lexicon here.

Our selection of guides

Later in this article, we highlight some of the local players we met on our travels around the country. We’ll put you in touch with Kyrgyz guides or families whose service we’ve really appreciated, thanks to their seriousness, kindness and attentiveness. All these people have read and signed our ethical charter, which covers topics such as animal welfare and respect for the environment.

Top 10 horseback riding tours in Kyrgyzstan

1- Song Kul Lake

This is THE most popular horse trek in the country! And not for nothing, the scenery around this lake perched at an altitude of 3,000 m is magnificent. The mountains and high meadows surrounding the lake are covered with nomadic yurt encampments. Between the hordes of horses and the thick smoke escaping from the yurts, it’s a complete change of scenery. Horse-riding tours around Lake Song Kul are generally organized over 2 or 3 days, with overnight stays in a yurt. A once-in-a-lifetime experience! In the following paragraph, we’ll give you all our tips for discovering this mythical lake.

2- Chong-Kemin Park

Wild and relatively untouched by tourism, Chong-Kemin National Park offers several 1 to 3-day itineraries for horseback excursions. Between pine forests, high-altitude meadows and glacial lakes, the scenery is varied and equally sumptuous. You’ll find our recommendations for visiting this valley and finding nomads to rent horses in our Explore Kyrgyzstan guide (see tracks 3 and 4).

3- Besh-Tash Park

This park in the west of the country is little known to tourists, yet it’s well worth a visit. A small gravel track follows a wide green valley to Lake Besh-Tash (see track 21 in the Explore Kyrgyzstan guide). Gradually we leave the forest for the high meadows where the nomads settle in summer. From here, you can take a horseback ride to Lake Besh-Tash and explore the surrounding area. For experienced riders, a 9-day trek to Lake Sary-Chelek is available.

4- Sary-Chelek lake

The Sary-Chelek lake, at an altitude of 1873 m, is a real haven of peace. From the village of Arkyt, a well-maintained dirt track (level 2) some 20 km long leads to the southern shore of the lake. The reserve contains a total of seven lakes with numerous hiking trails of varying degrees of maintenance. This turquoise lake surrounded by forests is ideal for a multi-day trek on horseback.

5- Lake Köl-Suu

Lake Kol-Suu is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful lakes in Kyrgyzstan. The intensely blue lake meanders for around 16 km between high granite cliffs. Located along the Chinese border, Lake Kol-Suu is particularly isolated, and a border permit is required. Allow 5 hours’ driving on a stony track, a 4×4 is recommended (see track 19 in the Explore Kyrgyzstan guide). Once you’ve arrived at the yurt camp, allow a day on horseback to enjoy Lake Kol-Suu and the surrounding area.

6- Jirgalan

There are many possibilities for 1 to 5-day excursions on foot or horseback around this small village. We did notice, however, that prices were higher than elsewhere.

7- Tash-Rabat and Chatyr Kul

The area around the Tash-Rabat caravanserai is ideal for hiking and horse-riding. There are 1- to 5-day itineraries across the At-Bashi mountain range to Lake Chatyr-Kul. The surrounding area is magnificent, especially the Tash-Rabat pass at 3,964 m, with its superb views over the great Chatyr-Kul lake. A border permit is required to use the hiking trails leading down to the lake. Don’t hesitate to ask the various yurt camps about possible itineraries. It’s also possible to take a 3-day horseback ride from the village of Kuzul-Yuu, not far from Naryn. This hike takes in Lake Chatyr Kul and ends at the Tash-Rabat caravanserai. This little-known itinerary is well worth a visit!

8- Saimaluu Tash

Accessible in half a day on foot or horseback from the new Chaek-Kazarman road, the famous Saimaluu Tash archaeological site is home to over 10,000 perfectly preserved rock engravings. Between representations of domestic and wild animals, scenes of life, hunting and ritual dances, these petroglyphs, over 3,000 years old, represent an archaeological treasure trove of worldwide scientific significance. This open-air petroglyph field is the largest collection in Central Asia.

9- Suusamyr Valley

If you’re looking for a trek off the beaten track, then the Suusamyr Valley is the destination for you. Situated not far from Bishkek, this valley, perched at an altitude of 2,200 m, is home to many shepherd families who take advantage of its green meadows in summer to graze their livestock. This is an opportunity to discover nomadic traditions (equestrian games such as Kok-Boru, traditional songs, etc.) with the super guide Temirkhan.

10- Lake Kol Ukok

This small mountain lake with its turquoise waters can be reached in a day on foot or horseback from Kochkor. The trail is very easy to follow, but if you prefer, it is possible to organize the trek with a guide from Kochkor.

The legendary Song-Kul Lake horse trek

Song Kul Lake, perched at an altitude of 3100 m, is one of Kyrgyzstan’s top destinations. Surrounded by green pastures and snow-capped peaks, this azure-blue lake is breathtakingly beautiful. Numerous agencies offer horse-riding excursions to Song Kul Lake, usually lasting 3 full days and including two nights’ accommodation. An experience you won’t soon forget!

Below you’ll find our recommendations for English-speaking guides for a memorable ride on Lake Song-Kul!

Timur, a local guide in Song-Kul!

✅ 30 verified reviews

Timur is a young Kyrgyz guide from Song-Kul. Since he was a child, he has spent summers with his family in a yurt camp on the north-western shore of Lake Song-Kul. He learned English from the tourists, whom he loves to accompany and guide through the mountains surrounding the lake.

Timur offers a 3 to 5-day horseback ride to Lake Song-Kul. You’ll sleep at the foot of the lake in his family’s charming yurts, enjoy delicious meals prepared by his mother, and admire breathtaking views of the lake. Authentic experience guaranteed!

We are convinced that Timur is the best English-speaking guide in Song-Kul. Just take a look at the many traveler reviews below!

This 1st day’s horseback ride will last around 4.5 hours. Along the way, you’ll see small rivers, mountains, flowers and many little houses where shepherds live in winter. Timur is a very popular guide in summer and may not be available on your dates. In that case, he can offer you a ride with his brother Uli or his cousin Isko.

Uli (26) – Timur’s brother
A passionate rider and excellent farmer, Uli has been guiding travelers for 9 years. A true expert, he is the stable’s resident veterinarian and looks after the education of the family’s horses. Language: Uli speaks good English, which makes it much easier to exchange and share knowledge of nomadic culture during the tour.

Isko (26) – Timur’s cousin
Seasoned rider and player of Kok-Boru (Kyrgyzstan’s national sport). Always smiling and very dynamic, he puts riders’ safety and comfort at the top of his priorities. Isko is also a farmer and horse trainer. Note: Isko’s English is basic, but his kindness and welcoming manner will soon make you forget the language barrier!

Fantastic tour. Very well organised once we arrived, and lots of fun. The view of Song-Kol were unparalleled, how often do you get to stay on the shore of the lake! The horses were very well trained and suitable even for beginner riders! The food on the trip was delicious, and although it was very cold overnight the yurts were comfortable.

We have spent three amazing horse trekking days with Timur and his team. Him, Gena and Murat showed us the Song Kul area in the most beautiful way.

The horses, the food, the laughs, the hospitality in the yurt camps were all amazing and can’t be compared with anything else. We feel very lucky to have been in the company of Timur and his family for our time in Song Kul.

Of course the landscapes are breathtaking and I can only recommend to anyone who wants to discover the beauties of Kyrgyzstan! The highlight of our trip ??

Looking forward to coming again!

For sure one of the best trips I’ve done in my life!

It’s not only about the stunning landscapes of Kyrgyzstan but also the fantastic food, local culture, and the amiable people that we had the opportunity to meet on our 3 days trip.

I made the trip with Yzat, Jon, Lukas, and Callum: THE BOYS TRIP!!

Everybody was very friendly and also adventurous, willing to learn how to properly ride a horse and gallop.

I found Timur through this website when trying to find a local guide to Song-kul lake. It was an absolute treat every step of the way, and I felt in every good hands. Beyond just the horse trek, spending time with his family and learning about the culture was beyond expectations. He also has a wonderful English and is a great communicator.

What a great trip! We had the most amazing two day trip with Timur, starting in Kyzart at his family’s place, heading over the mountains along the ridge to their summer yurt camp at lake Son-Kol. The Lake is on high altitude, so don’t forget to bring some warm clothes! Timur and family are great companions, not only knowing the ins and out of their area, history, and culture. Even more, they are well connected in the community and can organise a stay for the night in Kyzart or help your onward travel. Best recommendation, exchange your WhatsApp number early on and you’ll have best contact with him to organise the trip.

Would I go with Timur again? 100%

Salam,

Welcome to our home! We’re a small, family-run agency based in Kyzart, the gateway village to majestic Lake Son-Kul. Here, hospitality is not a profession, it’s a tradition.

In our guesthouse, each member of the family contributes to an unforgettable experience: while our mother prepares delicious traditional dishes, the men of the family guide you through the mountains.

Olivia & Victor’s verdict: following very positive feedback from our readers, we are delighted to add this small, family-run agency and its three local guides to our selection of the best guides in Kyrgyzstan!

Yrys - The expert

Gulbara’s husband, Yrys has been working in tourism since 2014. A freelance guide since 2018, he has perfected his English over the years to passionately share the secrets of his region. Responsible and open-minded, he organizes tours ranging from 2 to 7 days, with particular attention to the safety and comfort of his riders.

Amanbek - The next generation

Gulbara’s brother, Amanbek, is 22 and currently studying. But don’t let his young age fool you: like all Kyrgyz, he grew up in the saddle! With already 6 years’ experience as a guide during his summer vacations, he receives excellent feedback for his dynamism and natural knowledge of the terrain. He also speaks English.

Tahibat - Wisdom

Tahibat, Gulbara’s uncle, is a pillar of equestrian touring. He has immense experience of high mountain trails. Although he doesn’t speak English, he’s the ideal guide for those looking for total, authentic immersion if Yrys or Amanbek aren’t available.

We booked a 3 day Tour just after the End of the season.

Our Guide was Izat (hope I spelled it right) the brother of Azema. He was very professional and could tell us everything about the Kyrgis culture and speaks English perfectly aswell as some German which was very funny and nice for us. Food was very good. The Nomad games a very interesting experience. And the Horseriding was an awesome yet dangerous experience, because we never did horseriding before and due to the offseason the ground was a bit slippery because of the snow and ice. But the guide was very experienced and so it was very easy to accomplish the ride to see the turquoise lake and have a stunning view to the snowy mountains.

We hihgly reccomed this tour, but it might be even better in the Main Season with more people and less cold nights.

            Fantastic trip through and through.

The family is also really great and hospitable. We spent a lot of time with Temirkan, and he had a lot of things to talk about.

Whether this is one of the most popular treks or not, it certainly felt very authentic.

If I am ever to go back to Kyrgyzstan, I would consider booking the trip again, just to get an update on Temirkan and his family.

We had a wonderful time with Azema and then Temirkhan that we had the chance to meet both during our 2 days trip ! We learnt a lot about Kirghizstan culture, history, ways of life. Azema and Temirkhan were very careful to us. The horse riding was amazing to the Kol tor lake (even for beginners). We chose this trip to have a « Kirghize introduction » near Bichkek to begin our trips, it was perfect !

We had booked 3 days of horseriding in Suusamyr but due to some setbacks we had to change plans and go to Chon Kemin in a guest house. what can I say, it was a super relaxing weekend between horseback riding and playing kok boru and a cooking lesson. a beautiful place that we will always carry in our hearts

We were meant to go on a 2-day tour to Suusamyr valley to discover the nomad lifestyle. Unfortunately the weather was too cold so Azema from changed the plans so we could go to Chon Kemin valley instead. We were so pleased with the tour! Azemas father was super friendly and guided us through the whole trip. The scenery was stunning and we enjoyed horse riding, archery and nomadic game. The people and the locals at the guest house was also extremely friendly. I can really recommend this tour company to everyone.

We had the most incredible three days on this tour. Temirkhan was so lovely and looked after us very well. All of the people were so friendly and accommodating teaching us local games and having fun with us in the evening. We feel so lucky to have participated in this incredibly special tour.

We had an amazing time in Suusamyr valley with the local herders. The location is unbeatable and the locals are very friendly. We spent a lot of time playing games with them and betting on various activities :’) Safe to say we are poorer financially but richer in memories!

It was one of the best tours I ever did! We really lived with the locals for 3 days which gave a real insight into their culture. Also we got spoiled with a lot of food and could even try fermented horse milk. In general everybody was very welcoming and helpful.

The nomad games where crazy, I have never seen something like this in my life ? but it was definitely worth to see! Also the schedule was not so tight, so one could also relax a bit, pet the animals and have a look around.

This was one of the greatest tours I have been on. The family as well as the other Kyrgyz around were super nice, welcoming and interested in us, we played a lot of games and ate a lot of food in the “free time”. The program it self is not too tight, but we got to do all the things you wish to see when staying in a yurt. I loved the horses and even got extra time to ride around alone. All around as lovely a tour as the beauty of the nature!

It was a great pleasure to have a 3 days horse trekking with Timur! It was the first time for myself and my wife to ride a horse, but Timur made it easy for us – even though sometimes the trail was challenging, we were able to make it and enjoy the boost of adrenaline! Beautiful views, sleeping in the yurts, meeting local Kyrgyz people – all will remain in our memories for the rest of the life!

Basic rules before travelling on horseback in Kyrgyzstan

If you’re a beginner, never leave home unaccompanied.

Although it is possible to rent horses without a guide, we strongly recommend that you always leave accompanied by a guide or “horseman”. The Kyrgyz have been riding since childhood, and know their horses and the terrain inside out. So it’s essential to be accompanied by at least one person who knows horses, especially if you’re a beginner.

            Equipmentand protection

Few agencies provide protective equipment, especially riding helmets, as they are not used by locals and are expensive. If you plan to ride for more than 3 days, riding pants may be a good idea. In any case, expect a sore bottom! Wear high closed shoes. If it’s raining and you want to put on your raincoat, be careful, as some horses can’t stand the sound of rubbing raincoat fabric. To prevent him from galloping off while you’re on his back, we advise you to get off the horse to put on and take off your raincoat.

“If you want to help a local guide, you can buy a bomb before your trip (around €15 at Decathlon) and give it to your guide at the end of the trek. This way, you protect yourself and do your guide and travelers a favor after you! “

            crocoloup doigt 02

            Animal welfare

Equestrian tourism is very lucrative in Kyrgyzstan. Indeed, almost all families have horses that they can make available to agencies or tourists directly. Some horses are therefore overexploited, and their health endangered. To avoid encouraging such practices, we advise you to discuss them with your guide. Explain your requirements. The animal must not have been riding in one tourist group after another, and must be able to rest and eat properly between groups. Check the horse for injuries to the saddle, tail and legs. Some horses are not shod, which can be very painful for them if you’re trekking over rocky terrain. If your animal limps or seems to be suffering during a trek, continue on foot or ask your guide to change horses.

            Accident insurance

Don’t go trekking on horseback in Kirghizia if you’re not insured. The animals are unpredictable, as is the terrain (marmot holes, slippery path). So you’re never safe from an accident. It’s best to be insured if you need to be hospitalized locally or repatriated. We share our tips for choosing the best travel insurance here.

Our tips for riding a Kyrgyz horse

If you’ve never ridden before, don’t be afraid. Kyrgyz horses are very calm and quite small. If a horse is nervous, the owner won’t let you go with it unless he trusts you.

Never let go of the reins. Pull slightly right to turn right, slightly left to turn left. To stop, pull the reindeer down sharply, shouting “tak tak” which means “gently”. If you pull upwards, the horse may buck (stand on its hind legs!).

Don’t put your feet all the way into the stirrups. Just keep the tip inside the stirrups and the rest free. The reason is quite simple: if you fall, your foot can get stuck in your stirrups and this can be very dangerous.

If you want to trot or canter off, you can give the horse’s flank a sharp kick with your heel, shouting “chout chout”, which means “faster”. If he doesn’t listen, give him a slap on the ass. Don’t hesitate to use a more authoritative voice.

I was wondering when do the horse tours start in the season? Thank you. I was thinking of going to Kyrgystan beginning of May and would like to know if it is a good season.

Beginning of may is still very cold and snowy in the mountains, so it is not the best season but it’s possible 🙂

              • Hello Sem, Thanks for your message. Timur is an independant guide. He doesn’t have any signal when he is guiding in the mountains so it can take a few days to have an answer from him. Please be patient, and don’t forget to check your SPAMS. Best regards! Olivia
