- The GBAO permit allows you to visit the autonomous province of Upper Badakhshan (also known as Gorno-Badakshan).
- This permit gives access to the Pamir Route and many of Tajikistan’s tourist attractions: Bartang Valley, Lake Karakul, Wakhan Valley, Murghab, Khorog, Ishkashim, etc.
- The procedure for obtaining a permit takes 4 working days.
- It can be obtained within 1 working day (excluding Sundays and public holidays) with the Urgent 24h option, which costs an additional €10 per license.
- When your permit is ready, you’ll receive a digital copy in PDF or JPG format. You’ll need to print several copies for your trip.
- The GBAO permit is valid for one month from the start date you specify.
- For group orders, permits will be sent by email to the contact person who placed the order. You will receive as many permits as there are people in the group (each permit is nominative).

What is the GBAO permit?
The Gorno Badakshan Autonomous Region in Tajikistan, which covers the Pamir Mountains, is subject to strict regulations governing the movement of people, particularly foreigners. If you wish to visit this region, it is essential to apply for a GBAO permit in advance.
Do I need a GBAO permit to drive the Pamir route?
Yes, the section of Pamir road between Qalai Khumb and Kyzyl-Art requires a GBAO permit. The GBAO permit is also essential for visits to the Wakhan Valley, Bartang Valley, Zorkul Reserve, Lake Karakul, Murghab, Khorog, Ishkashim, Lake Sarez, etc.
How far in advance do I need to order the GBAO permit?
The procedure for obtaining a permit takes a maximum of 4 days.
The Urgent 24h option allows you to receive it within 24 hours (excluding Sundays and public holidays).
You can order your permit up to 5 months in advance.
How do I choose when to enter the border zone?
If you’re not sure when you entered the GBAO zone, don’t worry. The permit is valid for 1 month from the date you choose. You can enter the border zone at any time during the validity of your permit.
Is payment secure?
Payment is only possible online and in euros. Payment is secure via Stripe (VISA or MASTERCARD) or Paypal.
How do I get a GBAO permit?
The GBAO license sold on this site is 100% digital. There’s no need to go to the OVIR offices to get your permit, you’ll receive it directly by e-mail. It’s much more practical and 100% compliant (no need to show the original license at checkpoints). However, you will need to print out several copies of your permit, as some checkpoints keep a copy.
It is not possible to have the original paper version of the permit delivered. In fact, we preferred to offer a 100% online service to keep costs as low as possible.
How long is the permit valid?
The permit is valid for 1 month from the start date indicated on the form.
What are the cancellation conditions?
In the event of cancellation (for whatever reason), no refund is possible.
Is the GBAO permit controlled?
The GBAO permit will be checked at every entry and exit to the Upper Badakchan region, and at the many checkpoints inside the province. Please note that you will regularly be asked for a copy of your GBAO license and passport, so don ‘t forget to print out several copies. The GBAO permit will also be required at border crossings if you are arriving from Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.
Do I need a GBAO permit to cross the Kyrgyz-Tajik border?
If you wish to enter Tajikistan via the Kyzyl Art border crossing (Kyrgyzstan), a GBAO permit is required. In fact, this border area with Kyrgyzstan already belongs to Gorno-Badakshan.
PLEASE NOTE THAT A GBAO DRIVING LICENSE IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO CROSS A BORDER. Administrative formalities for border crossings (visa application, documents for your vehicle, etc.) are regularly updated here. We also recommend that you contact your embassy.
Is it better to order the GBAO at the same time as the visa?
It is possible to obtain the GBAO permit at the same time as the Tajik electronic visa, by applying on the official website (total cost: $70), but this is not necessarily the best solution. You do not need a visa if your tourist stay does not exceed 30 days. This visa exemption is valid for nationals of over 60 countries, including France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, etc. In this case, it’s best to order your GBAO permit separately. Please note that if you are traveling with a visa waiver, you must register with OVIR within 14 days (10 working days) of your arrival in Tajikistan. More information on e-visa and registration here.
