The philosophy of the forgotten path

Our travel philosophy

At first, we follow the “signposted” route. It takes us to the“coups de cΕ“ur”, according to Le Routard, or“must sees”, according to LonelyPlanet, to name but a few. This route is taken by the majority of travellers looking to discover the most beautiful sites quickly.

Then on this road, we identify a path that looks nice. We had planned to take this route because it was described in a forum. We’re pretty much on our own now, so it’s a nice walk off the beaten track to avoid the hustle and bustle of the tourists and see some of the country!

But eventually, on this path, we find a small trail that leads into a totally unknown region. Our whole philosophy is based on this little path! Everything is different here: encounters become more authentic, landscapes wilder, and exploration makes the simple things even more beautiful. We’re going to start getting lost without knowing where we’re going to sleep next night. Total freedom…

We improvise according to the people we meet, the weather and the scenery!

But if OunTravela gives us the small trails and everyone else does the same, we lose the objective? We give you the tools to prepare for your exploration, and our aim is to inspire you, not to serve you up with an easy-to-follow itinerary. You’ll find everything you need to improvise from day to day! The destinations we propose are always relatively untouched by tourism. You’ll find thousands of little trails!

Our adventure guides

Halfway between a road-book and a tourist guide, our books are collections of photographs and detailed maps of the most beautiful trails in a country or region. This original format allows you to compose your own itinerary. With a perfect knowledge of the terrain, you’ll be able to improvise your own itinerary as and when you feel like it, in complete autonomy. The trails we suggest in these books cross a variety of landscapes: valleys, rivers, lakes, mountains, steppes, deserts… This type of road-trip is designed to be close to nature and its inhabitants. You can sleep in the wilderness or with local people. What’s more, our books provide all the practical information you need for an autonomous trip (equipment, health, mechanics…). One section is devoted to the country’s environment and culture, which must be respected on this type of trip.
