🏔️ Information about your border permit
This permit allows you to visit all the border zones of Kyrgyzstan (except the Batken and Leylek districts). It is in no way a visa and does not authorise you to cross the border into a neighbouring country. This permit is required to drive tracks 3, 11, 12, 13, 19, 20, 24, 25 and 27 of our travel guide Explore Kyrgyzstan.

- Standard procedure: the standard administrative processing time is 6 to 10 working days. Weekends and public holidays do not count, as the administration is closed. Plan your application well in advance!
No express procedure is currently available.
- Note for groups: Group orders are issued on one single document. Group members must therefore travel together at checkpoints.
📍 Collection and validity
Default collection point: Your permit will be available at the souvenir shop OVOP (One Village One Product) in Bishkek (140 Toktogul Street) – open 7 days a week.
- Paid option : for a surcharge of €15 per application, you can collect your permit in Karakol or Osh. Allow 2 additional working days for delivery to these two cities.
Validity: The permit is valid for 1 month from the entry date stated in the form.
Cancellation: Once the procedure has started, no refund is possible.

What is a border permit?
Certain border areas are subject to strict regulations governing the movement of people, particularly foreigners. If you wish to visit these areas, it is essential to apply for a permit in advance. There are five restricted zones.
- Chuy region: Chong-Kemin valley
- Issyk-Kul region: Karkyra, Sary-Jaz, Engilchek, Khan-Tengri national park, Sarychat-Ertash reserve, Ak-Shyrak and Karasay checkpoint
- Naryn region: Ak Say valley, Kol-Suu lake, Kok-Kiya canyon, Chatyr-Kul lake and Torugart checkpoint
- Osh region: Trans-Alay range (Lenin peak)
- Batken region: Kadamjai, Leylek and Batken districts
You can order a permit for one or more zones. For simplicity's sake, we only sell the 5-zone permit and the 1-zone permit for Lake Kel-Suu. Please note that the districts of Leilek and Batken are not included in the 5-zone permit.
Which trails in Explore Kyrgyzstan require a border permit?
A border permit is required to access trails 3, 11, 12, 13, 19, 20, 24, 25, and 27 in our Explore Kyrgyzstan travel guide.
How far in advance do I need to order the border permit?
The permit application process takes between 6 and 10 business days. Please note that weekends and public holidays must be deducted from working days, as the administration is closed. Please check the dates of public holidays by clicking here. If you order your permit after 12pm (Kyrgyzstan time), your application will not be processed until the next working day. Additionally, please note that your permit will only be available after the 10th business day from 6:00 PM (Kyrgyzstan time), as this is when the administration issues permits.
If you apply for your permit several months in advance, we may not begin the process immediately, as depending on the year, the authorities may not accept applications submitted too far in advance. In that case, don't worry—we'll keep your file on hand and start the process as soon as the authorities allow it.
As soon as your permit is ready, we'll keep it safe at the pickup location until you come to pick it up (there's no time limit).
How do I choose when to enter the border zone?
If you're not sure when you'll be entering the border zone, don't worry. The permit is valid for 1 month from the date you choose. You can enter the border zone at any time during the validity of your permit.
Is payment secure?
Payment is only possible online and in euros. Payment is secured via Stripe (VISA or MASTERCARD) or Paypal.
Where can I get my border permit?
By default, permits are delivered to the OVOP souvenir shop, 140 Toktogul Street, Bishkek. It's a lovely souvenir and handicraft shop and a trusted address. They are open 7 days a week between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM.
As an option and for an additional €15, it is possible to have the permit delivered to their shops in Karakol or in Osh.

Please note that it is not possible to have the permit delivered to another city in Kyrgyzstan or outside the country.
Can you email me the permit?
No, we do not send any digital copies of the permit via email or text message. You must travel with the original of your permit. It will be checked at each checkpoint. Be sure to make copies in case you lose the original.
How long is the permit valid?
The permit is valid for 1 month from the date of entry into the border zone.
When will my border permit be ready?
Once your permit is ready, you'll receive a confirmation email and can pick it up at the OVOP souvenir shop in Bishkek (we'll keep it safe until your arrival). Once you've obtained your permit, keep the original and make several copies, as you'll need to leave one at each military checkpoint. You can make photocopies in one of the many print shops in downtown Bishkek. Your passport will also be required for verification at each checkpoint. Be sure to check that your name and passport number are correct on the permit.
What are the cancellation conditions?
In the event of a cancellation (for any reason), no refunds will be issued.
Do I need a border permit to enter or leave Kyrgyzstan by land?
The border permit sold on this page allows you to visit regulated areas located near the borders with China, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. IT DOES NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO CROSS A BORDER. Border crossing administrative procedures are regularly updated here. Please check with your embassy according to your nationality. If you wish to cross the Kyzyl Art border post between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan without visiting regulated zone number 4 (see map), then you do not need the border permit. However, you will need the GBAO permit. If you wish to cross the Torugart border post between Kyrgyzstan and China, the border permit is mandatory when traveling from Kyrgyzstan to China.
Is a border permit required for children?
Yes, the border permit is required for children, regardless of their age.
