4×4 rental in Tajikistan: the Pamir highway from Osh to Dushanbe

The best 4×4 rental agencies in Tajikistan

With its towering peaks, verdant valleys and arid high plateaus, the Pamir Route is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular in the world. This mythical road, which links Osh in Kyrgyzstan to the Tajik capital Dushanbe, is an ancient passageway on the Silk Road. In this article, we share our recommendations for renting a 4×4 in Tajikistan and organizing your road trip in the Pamir: the best 4×4 rental agencies in Osh and Dushanbe, road conditions in Tajikistan, documents to prepare, etc. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure, where every turn reveals a new breathtaking panorama!

Why choose Tajikistan for a 4×4 road trip?

Before visiting Tajikistan for the first time, we had a few images in our minds: dizzying mountains, long dusty roads and large high-altitude lakes! So yes, Tajikistan is all that, but it’s not all! We discoveredimmense fertile valleys home to picturesque villages and abundant crops, as well as numerous historical and prehistoric sites that bear witness to the country’s cultural richness. But what impressed us most was the hospitality and generosity of the Pamir people! So if, like us, you like to travel off the beaten track, explore wide open spaces and meet authentic people, go for it! But don’t forget that you’ll have to face a few challenges like altitude and poorly maintained roads, which is why it’s so important to rent a reliable off-road vehicle for your adventure! Once you’ve found the perfect 4×4 for your trip, take a look at our recommended itineraries for a 15-day road trip.

Is it better to rent a car in Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan?

The second highest road in the world, the M41 crosses the Pamir region for over 1,200 km, from Dushanbe in Tajikistan to Osh in Kyrgyzstan.

Since 2023, the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan has reopened, making it possible to travel between Osh and Dushanbe via the Kyzyl Art border crossing. Nevertheless, given the conflicting geopolitical situation between the two countries, be sure to check that the border is open at the time of your trip, and what steps you need to take. We update Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border crossing information here.

So which way to go on the Pamir route? Is it better to rent a car in Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan?

From Dushanbe to Osh, altitude gain is gradual, so acclimatization is easier. In the opposite direction, starting from Osh, the route is more spectacular as you reach 4000 m more quickly, but you’ll need to be more vigilant for symptoms of altitude sickness. It’s also worth noting thatit’s easier to find a driverless car rental agency in Kyrgyzstan, as the offer is larger and more varied (see our selection of rental companies in Bishkek and Osh here). Please note that not all Kyrgyz agencies authorize border crossings, for insurance and breakdown service reasons. Be sure to check! Rental agencies will also sometimes charge you extra if you don’t return the car to its point of departure.

To help you prepare for your road trip to Kyrgyzstan, we recommend our Explore Kyrgyzstan guide to the country’s 24 most beautiful itineraries.

What you need to know before renting a car in Tajikistan

All the documents you need to drive in Tajikistan

To drive a car in Central Asia, it is preferable (but not compulsory) to have an international driving license, especially in case of problems.

Please note that insurance is not compulsory in Tajikistan, and above all does not cover (or only inadequately covers) damage to cars. If you’re renting a car, be sure to check what type of insurance is included. At the very least, make sure you have third-party liability insurance (covers only damage caused to third parties: pedestrians, cyclists, other motorists, etc.) and insurance covering damage to the rental car, particularly in the event of a collision.

We strongly recommend that you take out your own personal travel insurance(see our comparison). In the event of an accident or health problem, the insurance will cover your treatment abroad and repatriation if necessary.

To travel in Pamir, you’ll also need a GBAO permit. Please note that the procedures for crossing the border into Kyrgyzstan may change from time to time, so we update the information on border crossings in this article.

Road conditions on and around the Pamir Highway

When leaving the country’s major cities (Dushanbe, Khorog, etc.), expect to drive on roads in poor condition. Even though most of the Pamir road is asphalted, deformations and potholes are very common. Be careful, because there’s a tendency to speed up on asphalt stretches, but that’s a big mistake! You can quickly be surprised by the huge holes in the road surface and cause serious damage to the car if it doesn’t have good suspension. Apart from the M41, you’ll be riding mainly on dirt tracks in poor condition, put to the test by frequent flooding and landslides. It’s best to choose an off-road vehicle to travel with complete peace of mind on the roof of the world!

What type of vehicle is best for travelling in Tajikistan?

In Tajikistan, a reliable, well-equipped 4×4 is your guarantee of a trouble-free road trip! Roads in Tajikistan are poorly maintained, and are put to the test by the mountainous climate (landslides, floods, frost, etc.). We recommend renting a 4-wheel-drive vehicle with off-road tires and good ground clearance. Given the altitude, it’s best to choose a powerful 4×4, as it can heat up quickly and lose power. In order of preference: Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Prado, Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero, Mitsubishi Delica, Buhanka UAZ, Lada Niva, etc.

Additional equipment to consider when renting

Don’t forget that you’ll be traveling in isolated areas, so forget about the telephone and Internet networks. Outside the main towns and a few villages, you won’t have a network. Bring along paper maps or download offline maps from your GPS navigation application. If it makes you feel better, it’s sometimes possible to rent a satellite phone. Gas stations are also fairly rare, especially in the Pamir. Bring one or two cans of petrol with you, depending on the range of your 4×4 (tank size and average fuel consumption). Ask your rental company to provide you with some basic tools in case of mechanical problems, and make sure you have everything you need to change a flat tire (spare tire, jack, flat tire repair kit, etc.).

Dushanbe is the capital and largest city of Tajikistan. This is where you’ll find car and motorcycle rental agencies.

We had three countries done with Oibeks vehicle 80 series, the vehcile was not new and comfy but very durable and stable on off roads that’s what we wanted, because we have our new comfy vehicle at home back in Canada, for off roading we suggesting his vehicles because they are capable to overland any conditions of the mountains, but please always ask Oibeks feedback about the car so he can tell you the weakness of the vehicle because they are not new and I am totally agreed with that.

By the way we had not other rental company found with border crossing Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

My friend Nicki got communication with Oibek few months before Summer time, We had a great trip no matter in what conditions the weather was the Machine Land Cruiser 80 series did his job easily, I can say that SILKWAY is very professional company with many connections in the Pamir Mountains, although we have we knew and signed the agreement that the vehciles are not new at the collection day and they were from 90s and we were total agreed on the deal because the vehciles are made for such roads as Pamir mountains. My estimation is that if I bring my new TLC200 series in to Pamirs it may also break no matter how we operate.

I booked a car with Oibek. We just asked any car that fits 3 persons and our route. We had some communication issues about the dates, schedules etc. I definitely recommend moving to WhatsApp after initial contact to get replies a bit faster than 2 weeks.

However when we arrived to Osh things started to go much smoother, though we were informed that we need to visit public notary that opens at 10 am so it caused a bit of delay so in the end we were able to depart at 11:00. Land cruise 80 was old and it has seen engine change – Registration papers and name plate said it had petrol engine, but it was in fact diesel without turbo, but it did not cause any issues.. just don’t expect any performance up in the mountains. Total kilometres said 440 000, but based on tear and wear of shift stick etc it could have been 1 440 000. Seats were also changed at some point. Gear number 3 synchronisation was non existent so changing to that gear was a bit challenge. At end of our trip we encountered a small leak in cooling system and brakes. As it was on our way back to Osh Airport (we agreed to return car there) it did not cause issues to our trip.

So whole experience was completely in line with my expectations operating in the area. Most of things don’t work but things will work out.

I absolutely do not recommend this company and cars rented by Oybek.

We rented two cars for the Pamir Highway. Both were in terrible condition. Throughout the entire trip, we had constant problems: a broken driver’s seat, overheating engines, a non-functioning thermostat, cracked radiator hoses, issues with the right front wheel, and most likely a faulty driveshaft. We had to repair the cars every single day.

We were also offered a third vehicle for the trip, which was in a similarly awful condition. It had poor brakes and transmission problems. Previous renters, whom we personally met on the road, had also complained about the same issues. The vehicle was offered to us for free so that we could deliver it to Osh.

While driving through the mountains, the brakes failed critically, putting the crew’s lives at serious risk. The rental owner reacted only with anger that the car had been left inoperable on the road.

We managed to deliver the remaining two vehicles to Osh. Despite the numerous repairs we carried out—returning the cars in better condition than when we received them—the owner refused to return our deposit. In total, we lost more than $2,000, which the owner, Oybek (Oibek), is refusing to refund.

An absolutely unreliable business. Cars in terrible condition. Avoid at all costs. My friends rented a bike from Oybek. Also terrible experience, kept breaking down all the time.

We had rented the Toyota land cruisers 80 series summer of 2025 which other companies do not have one, 4×4 has independent diff lock system, and other companies are not renting for other countries like Tajikistan. Oibek’s vehicles are able to cross Pamir Highway if you are a good driver or you may stuck because of lack of experience in such conditions as Pamir.

Breakdowns are common things if it is even new vehicles and it is also depends from our ability how to operate in such off-road conditions. Overall i recommend Oibek’s tough machines for your trip in Central Asia especially in the Pamirs.

We were driving Oibek’s TLC 80 Series and had a wonderful time in May 2025, Oibek’s fleet is not new but well maintained, and i understood that few issues like (ignition, air conditioning and electrical) problems happened on roads and it is age of the car also i believe unpaved road conditions which caused failures. Oibek gave us quick help by contacting to mechanics in Pamirs and add some days for lost ones.

Oibeks connections really helped us even no matter where we were Kyrgyzstan or Pamirs. Overall the vehicles of Oibek could only cross the south border (from Kyrgyzstan) and there is no other companies are able to rent towards Pamir as we could not find one.

Pamir highway roads are terrible and Legendary TLC 80 series able to cross at 4500m via Bartang valey revers and we believe the most important TLC 80 got two axels which is very helpful for such road conditions.

I live in New York city and in my life i saw many individuals. Oibek was one of the honest persons i had been in touch with in my life.

To be honest the vehicle Oibek provided was perfectly maintained, if even it was old vehicle 1997 Lexus lx450 which is same as TLC80 series it showed itself strongly to overtake the overland called Pamir Highway. As i carefully listened Oibek giving me instructions before the trip which is very helpful from his side.

Pamir roads are not regular asphalt roads and any car no matter new or old will fail if the driver is not well prepared, if you have small skills how to operate 4×4 vehicle then you are ready, otherwise Oibek is there to help.

Vehicle we have rented was very ready, and after driving 1000kms we had battery failures of the car, by the way battery tightness was tight perfectly in Osh, same for starter bolts, after we have contacted to Oibek and he advised me to look first for the screws and bolts of the battery and starter which was very helpful which solved the situation quickly and i understood the road shaking and harsh road conditions caused these failures happened, which we managed to solve quickly, because i was ready for such a trip. I am not blaming Oibek for that as the Julia and Marcus wrote earlier on review because they are not professionals or they are hiding a story behind which will be also to tell about it on review .

My opinion please ask each condition of the roads of the Pamir and Kyrgyzstan and about the vehicle from Oibek because he knows a lot and i highly recommend him.

We strongly advise against renting a vehicle from Oibek!

Of course, rental vehicle prices in Kyrgyzstan are generally high – this is also the case with other providers. But with Oibek, a number of serious problems arose:

– We did not receive the vehicle we had originally booked.

– The roof tent we had booked as an extra was not available at first – we had to pick it up ourselves from Oibek later and install it ourselves.

– The interior of the vehicle was in very poor condition: untidy, partly dirty, with old socks and even tablets lying around inside.

– The car was completely stuffed with spare parts, leaving hardly any room for our own luggage.

– Despite the promise of a ‘fully equipped camping kitchen’, basic items were missing: no gas cooker, no refrigerator, no sharp knives, no cutting board. All that was available was a dirty set of dishes and two pots.

Technical condition of the vehicle:

– Constant loud noises while driving. My husband (a mechanic) had to remove the stabiliser and replace the rubber seals between the chassis and frame every few days.

– The vehicle repeatedly failed to start because the battery mounts had slipped. There were even loose screws (!!) screwed into the battery.

This resulted in hours of repairs on the road.

Further experiences:

We met two Israelis who had also rented from Oibek. They told us a day later that their vehicle even had to be towed after a visit to the garage.

Although we originally wanted to drive the Pamir Highway, the vehicle was definitely not suitable in this condition. We had to change our plans and stay in the country. Despite all the massive defects, we did not receive any discount.

Conclusion: Overall, a very disappointing experience. For the prices charged, this service is absolutely unacceptable. Cleanliness, reliability and, above all, technical safety are not to be expected at Oibek. We would not wish such an experience on anyone.

Dear OunTravela team,

We are currently traveling as a family in Kyrgyzstan, following your travel guide. We rented a vehicle through Oibeck, as suggested in your guide, for our two-week trip with our three children.

We are used to off-road adventures – we have traveled through Mongolia, the Namibian desert, and many other countries with our own 4×4. Unfortunately, the car we were provided with in Kyrgyzstan was in very poor condition.

• First, we faced brake problems, then a battery failure, then tire issues, and finally a starter breakdown.

• Because of these repeated failures, we lost 4 full days of our trip.

• At one point, we had to sleep by the roadside, just to be sure we could get help if the car would not start again.

• Today, we are stuck in a hotel with our three children, waiting for my husband to find yet another garage – the third time during this trip.

The person who rented us the car spoke very good English and was always available on the phone, but he simply did not do his job properly. He put my family and myself in danger by providing a vehicle in such bad condition.

In addition, the camping equipment included was almost non-existent. We even had to buy a table ourselves in Bishkek.

We feel it is important to share this experience with you. Our adventure could easily happen to other families. We strongly recommend that you carefully check the type and condition of the vehicles you list in your guide before suggesting them to future travelers.

Thank you for your attention, and we hope our feedback will help improve the safety and reliability of your travel guide.

Best regards,

Rajaa

Highly recommended! We got a 2023 Mitsubishi Montero ( which is a Pajero in other parts of the world) had ondly 3000 km. Routes 6,8,and 16 were no problem at all in dry conditions ( different story with rain as the car came with stock tyres. But they have to be chanched to real AT tyres sooner or later anyway. The car was fully equipped with a bottle jack, spare tyre, tyre repair kit, air compressor, recovery strap, jumper cable , shovel and a 20 liter canister. Only thing not available are recovery boards. The contract is in English and transparent. Pickup or dropoff at the airport or hotel for 15 USD.
