4×4 travel in Oman
Oman boasts an incredible diversity of landscapes: from wadis lost in the mountains to white sand dunes jutting out into the sea, a vast desert plain covers most of central Oman and several high mountain ranges (Jebel ach-Chams, 3,009m) stretch along its north and southeast coasts. There are few paved roads (outside Muscat city) and they connect the major cities (Muscat, Nizwa, Salalah). To stay on these main roads is to miss out on the beauty and diversity of the country’s landscapes. For access to remote and wild areas, 4-wheel drive is essential. You can also cross the country by motorcycle, mountain bike or on foot. Wilderness camping is permitted , so you can enjoy a starry sky free of light pollution. Drinking water points are available in all villages.

Which 4×4 to rent for your trip to Oman?
There are many 4×4 manufacturers and models, but not all of them are present in Oman. So you don’t get lost, we’ve put together an article on the best 4×4 rentals. The leading brands in Oman are Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi. If you have a problem during your road-trip with one of these brands, it will be easier to find a mechanic and parts than for other, less widespread brands.

Driving rules in Oman
Be cautious and alert to the behavior of other drivers, especially in Muscat where traffic can be heavy. The main roads are rarely used. You’ll often be alone on the road!
4×4 rental insurance
Rental companies will usually offer you insurance. If your credit card does not include coverage, take out the insurance offered by the rental agency. They usually offer Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) protection, which covers part of the damage to the rental vehicle in the event of an incident. We also recommend that you set aside a small “repair” budget, as a simple puncture can happen very quickly!
Road conditions in Oman
As mentioned above, the roads are asphalted only on the main routes. On the other hand, to access mountainous and desert areas, you’ll need to travel on tracks of varying condition (sand, stones, etc.). For example, the tracks in the mountainous region south of Mascat are often covered with pebbles and rocks. Also, you’ll be driving on sandy tracks, so you’ll need to switch to 4-wheel drive and deflate your tires, as explained in our article How to drive on sand. Of course, you can also choose to do only easy trails!
Rent a 4×4 in Muscat
Muscat is, of course, where you’ll find the majority of rental agencies. There aren’t many rental companies specializing in off-road vehicles, but the market is growing. Here is a selection of very serious and professional rental companies.
You can choose between international rental agencies and those specializing in 4x4s equipped for off-road driving and independent travel (with roof tent, camping equipment and other services).

Roof tent packages
- 1A roof tent + all camping equipment
- The tent measures 1.4 m wide x 3.1 m long. The actual size of the mattress is 1.4 m x 2.4 m.
- Suitable for two adults.
- 1B roof tent + all camping equipment
- The tent measures 2 m wide x 3.1 m long. The actual size of the mattress is 2 m x 2.4 m.
- Suitable for two adults + two children (<7 years)
- 2A roof tent + all camping equipment
- Rigid shell. Side-opening roof tent
- 1.9 m wide x 2.1 m long.
- Suitable for two adults + two children up to approx. 10 years.
All roof tents come with the following camping equipment:
- Sleeping bags + silk sleeping bag liners (on request) + mattress + camping mat + chairs + table
- Rechargeable LED lights + Cool box (not a battery-killing electric box) + Water canister + Pressurized hot water shower
- Shovel + Gas stove with gas bottle. It’s a large gas cylinder, not a tiny gas can.
- Frying pan + Saucepan + Kettle + Knives and forks + Plates, bowls and cups + Cutting board + Wash bowl + Useful kitchen utensils
Terms and conditions
Prepayment of 10% of the total via a secure payment link. The remainder is paid on site in cash (OMR) or by card (5% surcharge applicable). Free cancellation up to 14 days before your rental.
There are 3 types of insurance:
- Minimum insurance (included in the price): in the event of a major accident, the renter must bear the accident costs = 300 OMR (per accident), and if the accident is minor, we will coordinate with the garage and invoice you for the amount of the necessary repairs. However, these charges only apply if the tenant is responsible for the accident. If the tenant is not at fault, there is no charge, but he must obtain a final police report.
- CDW insurance (collision/damage/waiver) is 6 OMR per day. It includes off-road insurance, theft protection, etc., which reduces the deductible in the event of an accident from 300 OMR to 150 OMR (per accident).
- Full coverage is 10 OMR per day, which includes off-road insurance, collision/damage/waiver, theft protection, etc. In the event of an accident, the renter has nothing to pay us.
Others :
If the renter does not wish to take out insurance and is the victim of a major accident (each one), the renter will have to pay the costs of the accident, i.e. 300 OMR (per accident). If the accident is minor, we will coordinate with the garage and invoice you for the cost of the necessary repairs. But these charges will only apply if the fault lies with the tenant. If the tenant is not at fault, he won’t have to pay anything, but he will have to obtain a definitive police report.
Visit damages caused at pare–windscreen, at tires and à the box from speeds do are cutlery by no insurance. So, if a tire burst or is exhausted and do can be repaired, the cost a new tire will be à the load from tenant.

Additional driver = 2 OMR per day.
Baby seat = 2 OMR per day.
If the vehicle is returned in a dirty or soiled condition, an additional fee of 5 OMR or more will be charged, depending on the degree of soiling.
Parking, traffic and other fines are the responsibility of the tenant.
Small & Big 4×4 :
- We allow not our cars à borrow visit routes at very bad status leading at tray from Salma. We you authorize à borrow the route since QALHAT, as indicated à the page 232 from guide Offroad Explore. Visit other routes from the region are at very bad status and would cause too from damages à our cars.
- It is FORBIDDEN TO DRIVE TO BAR AL HICKMAN without a guide to accompany you to the lagoon. Too many cars got bogged down there and suffered extensive damage. Note: the services of a local guide to accompany you in one direction cost 25 rials.
- When off-roading, NEVER drive into a flooded wadi – YOUR CAR IS NOT INSURED FOR THIS.
- We do not undertake to provide off-road assistance.
- The loss of the car key will be invoiced to the hirer = 50 OMR.
- Damage to the roof tent will be charged to the hirer = 500 OMR.
- Border crossing insurance = Vehicles can only be driven into the United Arab Emirates at a cost of 25 OMR per trip (valid for 10 days). Other fees may apply. The letter of authorization to drive the vehicle in the United Arab Emirates will be provided by us. We will need copies of the driver’s license and passport of the person who will be driving the vehicle across the border.
Mini SUV :
- You can drive this car in from regions mountainous such that Jebel–Akhdar, Jebel–Shams, etc. and in from zones desert (on from sands dishes), but it is prohibited from drive on visit dunes.
- Mini-SUVs cannot be driven on this off-road route: the dirt mountain road linking Rustaq to Wadi Bani Awf, Al Awabi (Snake Canyon), Blad Sayt, Wadi Sahtan and the Eastern Mountains (Hat Mountain). https://goo.gl/maps/3nKXUWejNqhmjSNm8

We had an amazing experience renting a car and roof tent from Raj.
Pick up was seamless and Raj was very helpful in giving us local tips.
No issues with the car although felt tentative at times going up Jebel Shams. The roof tent was perfect and so easy to set up.
Raj made sure we were fully equipped with everything you’d need for the trip, although we had a couple issues with gas hob/canister breaking and a leak in the water pump.
Would recommend highly and use again would I be back in Oman!
We rented a smaller car with a small rooftop tent in November for a week. The communication before our vacation and during our stay was very quick and clear. The car, tent and supplies were all in a good condition, nothing was missing. The tent was very clean.
We absolutely enjoyed our trip because we got to see so many things, sleep in nature and just enjoy Oman to the fullest. I would definitely recommend.
We rented a Nissan Pathfinder for 8 days early November and were overall very satisfied.
The car was in very good conditions and proved to be very comfortable for our group of 4 adults and the trunk more than large enough for our 5 pieces of luggage.
Raj has been very flexible; eg we wanted to extend the rental for one day in Mascate and, while our car was no longer available, he proposed us another smaller car and we made the exchange in the middle of Old Mascate.
The communication was reactive and to the point, even if sometimes you have to remind him by WA! Raj is also sometimes so busy and reactive that he only reads partially some messages ?
2 areas for improvement ;
> clearer process for collecting the car ( including all admin) and for scheduling it (there is no facility at the airport and one need to schedule a meeting time and place nearby)
> as many drivers will not be experienced 4WD ones, a written operating manual with list of hints in usual situations would be useful. Raj gave us several hints when we collected the car, but it did not cover all (eg do not switch from 2WD to 4WD in the middle of a steep road …; when to use Descent Control …) A more complete list, with more detailed explanations would be useful
Last advice: make sure to be as clear as possible with your type of itinerary; all large 4 WD cars are not the same . Our Pathfinder was comfortable , but did seemingly not have same high ground clearance as a Pajero or a Land Cruiser.

Great country with great people! Raj was super nice and kind to us. We booked with less than 24 hours in advanced and everything went perfect.
We rented a 4×4 with a rooftop tent and overall had a great experience.
We initially contacted Raj online, and from the very beginning his communication and helpfulness were fantastic. He put a lot of effort into answering all our questions and explained everything in great detail, which made us feel very comfortable and well prepared.
The office where we picked up the vehicle was easy to find thanks to the clear description we received beforehand. At pickup, both the vehicle and the rooftop tent were explained thoroughly, so we knew exactly how everything worked before setting off.
The vehicle itself was a bit older and showed some signs of wear and tear. For example, the doors wouldn’t stay open on their own and kept falling shut, which was a little annoying at times. However, everything was functional and reliable throughout our trip.
While we were on the road, we spontaneously decided to extend our rental by two more days. This was no problem at all. Raj was always available via WhatsApp and responded quickly, making the whole process very easy and stress free.
We can highly recommend Raj and would happily rent from him again!

The vehicle with roof tent (Mitsubishi Montero) was in very good condition – clean, technically sound, and perfectly suitable for long-distance driving as well as off-road mountain road (e.g. Jabal Shams, Snake Canyon) or Wahiba Sands. Equipment is basic but everything you need for an adventure.
There is a Whatsapp group where you get information about events and nice camp spots. For questions you can get in contact with Raj before and during the trip and he replies really fast and helped us a lot.

We rented a 4×4 and roof tent with Raj thanks to OunTravela’s recommendation, and didn’t regret it. Raj’s offer was cheaper than anyone else’s, and although the car was starting to show its age it was perfectly suited for Oman’s rough terrain and comfortable enough. Our roof tent was almost new, and surprisingly comfortable.
A good thing to know: if you have a car problem, Raj reacts very quickly. We had a minor mechanical issue, Raj found a solution within 30 minutes, and all was well!

We took a 9-day road trip across Oman with Ready to Drive Muscat, and everything went exactly as planned and communicated in advance. The jeep was a bit older, but it proved to be very reliable and fully capable, handling both the desert terrain and Jabal Akhdar without any issues. The mattress was very hard though, so I would bring an extra to sleep comfortable.
Raj and his team have been great! From the pick up to the drop off, they were professional and always very gentle and available. Raj is very informative, funny and gives you a lot of suggestion on spots for camping anc places to visit. Highly recommended!
In January, we spent 12 days traveling around Oman in Raj’s car with a roof tent. The car, tent, and camping equipment were excellent. wir haben zwei Wochen lang den Oman bereist.
Nach mehreren Anfragen für einen Leihwagen bei verschiedenen Anbietern, haben wir uns entschieden bei Ray zu buchen.
Es hat alles sehr gut und völlig unkompliziert funktioniert.
Die Autos waren nicht neu, haben jedoch, den teils schwierigen Straßenbedingungen ohne Probleme standgehalten.
Einen Kleinwagen für die Tage in Maskat und einen 4×4 Pajero mit Dachzelt für die Reise in die Berge und die Wüste.
1200 km auf teils sehr holprigen und staubigen Straßen!
Die Kommunikation mit Ray fand größtenteils über WhatsApp statt.
Unsere Anzahlung für das Auto hatten wir versucht mit PayPal zu senden.
Dies funktioniert im Oman leider nicht gut, Ray hat darauf hin uns den gesamten Betrag zurück überwiesen.
Er hat auch Eurozahlungen akzeptiert. (zum aktuellen Tageskurs, sehr fair)
Sollten wir noch mal in den Oman reisen, würden wir wieder bei ihm buchen.

The car was powerful, we had no issue, the camping equipment is very good (everything you need including shower, sleeping bag and pillow). The Toyota Prado is one of the best 4x4s for off-road driving, and it's also very comfortable! What's more, it's easy to drive if you're new to 4x4 driving.
The Prado 2.7L is powerful enough for most of the trails in the Oman Off-road book, but if you want a more powerful car, Oliver also has a Prado 4.0L. Both have v6 petrol engines with automatic transmissions. These are 2018-2019 cars with 7 seats.

Very good expérience in Oman despite our inexperience in managing 4W vehicle. Raj was very precise and helpful all the journey long. His Tips, contact with a beduin guide Jaber were part of incredible memories in the desert. Our tent 240×200 was big enough for 3 adults. The shower set was a little bit old but worked with patience. Anything helpful was provided by Raj and his team which we appreciated a lot.
We rented a Toyota Land Cruiser wich was in a great condition and had a brand new rooftop tent. Everything worked perfectly fine and we could return rhe car at the airport!

- Car roof rack: – Installation cost: 5 OMR – Rental cost: 2 OMR per day
- Car awning: – Installation cost: 30 OMR – Rental cost: 5 OMR per day
- DC/AC converter (for recharging laptops, etc.): 2 OMR per day
- Petrol cans: 1 OMR per day and per can
- Safety helmets for canyoning in the wadis: 5 OMR per trip
- Walkie-talkies: 1 OMR per pair per day
- Satellite telephone: prices on request
Terms and conditions
- Minimum age: 23
A 10% prepayment is required in advance, and the remainder is paid when you pick up your vehicle. Accepted methods: cash, credit card or online transfer.
A security deposit may be required depending on the type of vehicle. The security deposit may be retained for up to 30 days after the vehicle’s return, to enable the processing of any delayed fines or penalties issued by the authorities.
Cancellations made at least 48 hours before the pick-up time are entitled to a full refund. Cancellations made less than 48 hours before pick-up may incur a charge equivalent to one day’s rental or 25% of the total amount, whichever is greater.
Basic insurance is included, unless otherwise stated. Optional comprehensive insurance is available at an additional cost and must be requested prior to the start of the rental period.
Some rentals include unlimited mileage. Others may have a limit specified at the time of booking.
24/7 roadside assistance is provided throughout the country.
