Road conditions in Georgia

The roads linking Georgia’s main cities are generally asphalted. So you won’t need a trail bike to get around between the main cities (Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, etc.). On the other hand, although a great deal of work has been undertaken in recent years to improve the condition of the road network, we must be cautious. That’s right, Roads can have varying degrees of damage: potholes, bumps and debris. Even on sections where the pavement has just been renovated, we advise you against speeding.

Which bike for your road-trip in Georgia?

You can ride any type of motorbike on the main roads, but as mentioned above, beware of potholes, bumps and other road damage. As a general rule, drive at a leisurely pace, as danger can come from anywhere: careless Georgians or the many animals on the roadside (pigs, dogs, cows, geese, etc.). You’re vulnerable on a motorcycle and emergency medical services are limited, so it’s best to be prepared!

For riding on Georgian trails, we strongly recommend a light, powerful trail bike and off-road tires (50/50).

The biggest difficulty in Georgia is the mud. The majority of Georgian trails are dirt tracks that can quickly turn into quagmires with a little rain. In case of heavy rain and in spring (snow melt), the tracks are slippery, so it’s best to have good tires! You may come across a few fords, particularly in Tusheti. If the water level is higher than your knee and there’s a current, we advise you not to take any risks: turn back or wait until the next morning (rivers are lower at the beginning of the day).

Don’t forget that in addition to your own weight, you need to add your equipment and any fuel reserves, which can quickly weigh down and slow down the bike. Note also that conditions can become extreme with snow and slippery road surfaces, especially when crossing passes.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Georgia?

Given the difficulty of finding spare parts and the cost of maintenance, the price of motorcycle rental is relatively high compared to other Southeast Asian countries.

For a 250cc motorcycle, you can expect to pay between 50 and 60 euros per day.

For a 600cc motorcycle, you can expect to pay between 80 and 100 euros per day.

Is an International Driving Permit compulsory?

An international driving license is not compulsory in Georgia, but is strongly recommended. It is rarely checked, but may be requested in the event of a problem or accident. It’s best to apply before you arrive! You can also have it translated into Georgian when you arrive in the country.
